Beanie Fashions That Turn Heads

By Leif Donegan

Having invested a few months looking over the marketplace and some of the biggest emerging hat trends, here are my choices for some of the hottest current hat styles...

Pom pom beanies - Everyone has a grade school photograph of themselves wearing one of these hats. I'm curious as to what the functional history is of the pom pom and if it ever endeavored to do anything useful. Not that you need to defend it's silly existence. As an element of style, the pom pom is like icing on a cake. It's not a winter hat without a pom pom.

Studded punk rock beanies - If beanies were popular in the late seventies (the punk rock years), they might have been covered in studs. Fast forward to now and 80's style has made a comeback and with it, one of the wackiest eighties trends... heavy metal studs. If they're not on shoes, they're on jackets, handbags, cellular phone cases and even hats. I must say they look pretty cool on hats, especially beanies.

Beanies with something to say - First there were shirts with a message, then ball caps (the odd time) and now it's beanies. If you are really inclined to make a statement, there's no better place to promote it than on your hat. You may want to steer away from controversial messages though, unless you want people to think you have an attitude problem.

Decade old (retro) beanies - There's nothing quite as unique as an article of apparel from twenty years ago. The sentiment that they just don't manufacture stuff like they used to is obviously true. Vintage clothing is absolutely one of a kind. If you want to be the square peg, take a look at a few of the auction websites for the search term vintage beanie and see what you can unearth.

Newsboy caps - Newsboy caps really became popular again a number of years ago and they're suitable for dressing up or down (pretty much any occasion). These are more of a British flavor but anyone can rock one.

Trucker hats - There are some really cool, vintage styles out there. Some of the coolest ones are again, hats from the eighties that maybe have old school Americana logos. You can get some fairly cheap blank trucker style hats out there... I've seen them sell for as little as a few dollars each on auction websites.

The major trends now appear to be vintage eighties fashion from small indie brands or even no brands at all. You can't go wrong with a plain beanie but if you want to make a splash, try vintage with a pom pom or maybe a bit of overt sarcastic embroidered text.
