Understanding The Civil War Gowns

By Patrice McCoy

Over the years fashion trends have evolved. Most people; be it man or woman have been captivated by this lifestyle. It touches on so many factors; however, fashionable clothing was considered most popular. Various trends have come about as a result of various factors, one of them being the environment. Civil war gowns also being a fashion statement have been endorsed in the design world. They originate from way back in time.

Arguably, the nineteenth century ushered in an era of fashion conscious women. What an individual put on was not taken lightly. A lot of thought and planning went into every item that one adorned. However, the civil war period did little to avail the necessary resources that were required for one to effectively make a fashion statement that stood out.

This notwithstanding, people still managed to put together something that could pass of as being presentable. When you look back to the Victorian period, you will be awed by the many unique styles that were created for both men and women. These costumes are versatile and can be used for quite a number of occasions. In this day, there are quite a number of events that celebrate this theme.

During this time one could easily distinguish between the high class citizens from the rest. This could be noted from their lifestyle and way of dressing. For women in the high social class, dressing up in fancy clothing with expensive fabric was a common affair. Silk and other classy materials were used to tailor their high end outfits.

On the other hand, there were categories of clothing, formal and informal. However, in both categories there some common denominators. Corsets and petticoats were always part of the dressing. White gloves and some laced up boots completed the look.

Women had the largest range of garments to choose from when it came to costumes. The poor class of this era did not have much of a choice. What was available to them were just simple or plain pieces of clothing. Even in the rare situation that one had saved up some money to buy a good dress, coming across the fabric was not an easy feat to achieve.

As strange as it may sound, women at some point wore locks of hair from their spouse or boyfriend. Flowers also went well with this. They acted as jewelry which really looked fashionable at the time. One could not step out with their hair looking disastrous. No matter how well dressed one was, their hair said a lot. Women embraced the use of hair oils and pomades to ring out an overall outward appeal.

The upper class women reserved full skirts for themselves. They were often wide. The end effect was an elegant look that allowed them to step into their role with dignity. All these were accompanied by very colorful patterns and designs on the dresses and skirts. Needless to say that without a matching hat, the civil war gowns look could not be considered to be complete.
